A newly discovered stick insect species named Acrophylla alta has been identified as Australia’s heaviest insect. Found in the high-altitude rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, the females measured up to 40cm in length and up to 44 grams in weight—heavier than any previously known Australian insect. Up until now, the giant burrowing cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), native to Queensland, held the title, weighing up to 35 grams. The shift in record is significant
