Thomas A. Dorsey cut his teeth playing the blues in clubs and house parties but eventually returned to his church roots — just not its sound. Dorsey’s bluesy compositions were frowned upon by many mainline churches, and it wasn’t until 1932, when Dorsey wrote his seminal piece “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” after losing his wife and child, that he was named the Father of Gospel.
