Fatigue is one of the most common side effects of cancer and its treatment. Some studies say as many as 80 to 100% of cancer patients experience extreme fatigue. Wilmot Cancer Institute's Karen Mustian, PhD, helped write a new set of national guidelines for easing fatigue in cancer patients. Among the top recommended treatments: exercise, talk therapy (also known as cognitive behavioral therapy), qi gong, mindfulness, yoga, and more. Three months after Ruth’s treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma ended, she was more tired than she had ever been, but people didn’t understand why. They told Ruth to stay active, but it just wiped her out. Before her diagnosis Ruth always kept fit so she took up open water swimming with the goal to cross the Serpentine in Hyde Park in London.
