ORTHODOX ENCYCLOPEDIA: ALLELUIA "Alleluia" (Greek: ἀλληλούϊα; Hebrew: הַלְלוּ־יׇהּ, [halləlû yāh], meaning "Praise the Lord") is a brief hymn glorifying the Creator for His great mercies toward mankind. Primarily serving as the concluding refrain to many doxologies, it is recited during kathisma readings at Matins, following psalms at the Hours, in the Six Psalms, at molebens and memorial services. Typically, it is sung or chanted three times in honour of the Holy Trinity, followed by the phrase
