Millions of tiny walleye fry spend their first weeks of life at the Waterville hatchery, amid the white noise of pumps and running water. For many Minnesota lakes, there wouldn't be walleyes to catch if it wasn’t for the DNR walleye spawning and stocking program. A big thank you goes out to the many DNR fisheries crews across the state at hatchery facilities for recently completing this very important work. The walleye spawn is on! Stopped by the Walker Lake Fish Hatchery this morning. The MN DNR set their 1st nets Wednesday night and have begun collecting walleye eggs and combining with walleye milt to produce walleye fry. They should be working every morning for up to a week. They are trying to reach a certain number of quarts, so it can go quicker. The public is welcome to observe.
