The white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata) is found across much of North America and is sometimes known as a "hummingbird moth" because of its large size and hovering flight. Diurnal populations of this moth prefer to nectar on brightly colored flowers (much like hummingbirds); nocturnal populations typically use pale or white flowers. Is it a hummingbird? No, it’s a white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata)! These moths hover in front of flowers and drink nectar through their proboscis, a tube that extends from the front of their heads. Sphinx moths look, move, and eat like hummingbirds, but they are not closely related. Hummingbirds and sphinx moths–creatures from two different branches on the tree of life–have evolved similar traits to fill similar ecological niches. Thanks to their incredibly long tongues, they’re able to feed from many flowers that most other native pollinators can’t. Explaining Insects 🦋 on Instagram: "The sphinx moth is a large, powerful flier known for its fast, hovering flight that resembles a hummingbird. It belongs to the family Sphingidae and is found in many parts of the world. These moths have streamlined bodies, narrow wings, and are often beautifully patterned with earthy or vivid colors. As caterpillars, they’re called hornworms because of the small horn-like projection on their tail. They feed on plants like tomatoes, tobacco, and petunia
