Here’s my general thoughts on this … Chances are you are less likely to pick him up probably in the kitchen than anywhere else because you're busy cooking and cleaning in there. To me that says it's a time when he knows that you're not going to pick him up and that's why he gets upset. From my experience generally kids eventually learn that when they're in the kitchen
