Fifty years ago, August 1969 saw an escalation of what the world would come to know as the Troubles. Events of that summer led to the creation of the Provisional IRA. The organisation was responsible for the vast majority of killings carried out by republicans during the conflict, in which more than 3,500 people lost their lives.
