The US Senate voted today to strip California of its authority to enact state limits on tailpipe pollution that are tougher than national standards. Opponents called it an illegal move by Republican lawmakers that flies in the face of Senate rules and norms.

The Republican-majority Senate voted to nullify California's landmark environmental rule that would've banned the sale of new cars that exclusively run on fossil fuels.

Opponents of California's waiver, which had been adopted by 11 other states and Washington, D.C., called it economically burdensome.
