Drivers in some states have been advised to delay any unnecessary travel as the country celebrates Thanksgiving.

On Thursday at 2:06 p.m. a winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until Saturday at 1 a.m. for Northern Erie.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A significant winter storm will be moving into eastern Iowa over the next 24-36 hours. A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect Friday night through Sunday morning.

"Moderate to heavy snow expected. Additional snow accumulations between 3 and 8 inches for a storm total of 8 to 10 inches with 10 to 16 inches possible on northwestern slopes," NWS Vermont said in the winter storm warning.

A large winter storm that could bring some of the biggest snow of the season to the Central U.S. and Rockies is expected to significantly impact travel plans for millions of people across 40 states returning home from their Thanksgiving holiday starting on Black Friday.

Winter has finally made its return, with snow falling across the Hi-Line and mountain regions this morning. Showdown has received over 4 inches of snow so far.

But even if the heaviest snow doesn't materialize in southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities, the warning has also been expanded because gusty winds of up to 45 mph could create potentially hazardous, blizzard-like conditions on the roads.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Twin Cities metro as the first snow storm of the cold season approaches. The storm will bring rain and snow to the state and parts of the region Tuesday into early Wednesday.

A weather system that is moving across the country is bringing winter conditions to Ontario and Quebec starting Wednesday and into Thursday, with heavy snow and high winds expected.
