The next federal holiday coming up this year is Thanksgiving 2025, which falls on Thursday, Nov. 27. On the bigger federal holidays, particularly those at the end of each year, many stores choose to close along with banks and federal and state offices. Target tends to choose which holidays to observe throughout the year, like most stores.

In a move that reverberated across the national retail landscape, Target announced on September 26 its decision to close nine stores across four states. The stated reason was stark: “theft and organized retail crime had made them too dangerous to run.

Thanksgiving has arrived, and if you need to run out to grab a last-minute ingredient for your gathering, you will have some options.

In terms of scale, Walmart is far larger than Target, as it has many more stores in the U.S., a thriving international business, and Sam's Club, a direct competitor to Costco. Walmart is also the world's biggest retailer by revenue.

Target has laid out the early details of a turnaround plan, including remodeling and rearranging stores, revamping merchandise and leveraging technology.

Target announced a $5 billion investment to expand with larger stores and revamp existing locations despite ongoing sales challenges and market pressures.
