The ongoing controversy surrounding the police shooting of a mentalliy ill Queens schizophrenic man who charged at cops with a knife ratcheted up a notch Wednesday with the release of 911 audio the NYPD says makes clear police were going to be responding to the episode.

The NYPD on Tuesday released video of the recent police shooting of a man wielding a knife. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said it makes the case to change the way the city responds to mental health calls.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 17-year-old boy tossed a gun away as he tried to flee from a traffic stop in Stapleton, police allege. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on the 100 block of Tompkins Avenue near Broad Street, according to a spokesperson for the NYPD.

Mayor Mamdani is urging the Queens district attorney not to charge a mentally ill Queens man who was shot and critically wounded while running with a knife toward NYPD cops, saying the schizophrenic suspect “needs mental health care,
