KINGSTON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Jamaica on Monday secured up to $6.7 billion in international support over the next three years to fund reconstruction after Category 5 Hurricane Melissa slammed into the Caribbean island in October.
Caribbean excursion operator Island Routes has reopened many of its Jamaica experiences after temporarily shuttering them due to Hurricane Melissa. The company, owned by Sandals Resorts International, offers excursions like ATV tours, private yacht experiences and cooking classes. Additional tours will become available in the days ahead.
Tourism accounts for nearly a third of Jamaica’s economy, so officials are rushing to reopen dozens of hotels in time to salvage the vital winter travel season.
Jamaica secured a three-year financing package from multilateral lenders totaling $6.7 billion to help rebuild following a devastating hurricane that damaged key infrastructure, industry and homes.
