Fremont Street Nursery opened in 1943 as a daycare center to serve women in Winchester's North End who had joined the workforce while their husbands were fighting in World War II. Today, the nonprofit facility serves children from throughout the city, and it has a sliding-scale fee policy to help low-income families afford its services.
