The Pittsburgh Penguins sent defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the New York Rangers’ 2025 first-round pick (protected), forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais and prospect pick Melvin Fernström, the teams announced Friday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins decided they were not going to re-sign defenseman Marcus Pettersson and traded him with Drew O’Connor to the Vancouver Canucks for a couple of NHL players, a prospect, and the New York Rangers 2025 or 2026 first-round pick.

The Vancouver Canucks traded for Marcus Pettersson in a big deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. At the time, some criticized the Canucks for moving a first-round pick in this deal. Pettersson was a free agent at the end of the season.
